Physical Education

Our Curriculum

Physical education is highly valued at FCVS. It provides the foundation for a healthy lifestyle and promotes character building, co-operation and self-esteem. Involvement in sport can promote academic, social and emotional progress for the child as well as aid their physical development.

From The Early Years to Year 6, our lessons teach the underlying skills and principles of all the main sports including: ball skills, gymnastics, athletics, team games, large equipment, dance and outdoor activities and swimming.

The school is a member of the South Buckinghamshire School Sport Partnership. This gives us access to many competitions held in local primary and secondary schools which has led us to being awarded the ‘School Games Mark’ for our commitment to physical education for all children.

Our lessons are inclusive and teach the children a broad and balanced range of skills. Each year group has 2 hours of PE and sport each week. We also provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities before school, during lunchtimes and after school. In addition, specialist sports coaches deliver some lessons and clubs.

Swimming is included during Year 4, with each class swimming for 1 hour each week for a term. In addition, children in Year 5 and 6 are supported with extra swimming lessons to build confidence in the water.

Bike skills are introduced in Nursery with Balance Ability, this is continued in Year 2 and in Year 4 the children all take part in Bike Ability.

Along with the PE lessons, a healthy attitude to exercise is encouraged with participation of ‘mile-a-day’ which helps children to fulfil the government guidance of being active for 60 minutes daily.

Children are involved in a range of events, from interschool events such as House Football and the yearly House Run to competitions run in local primary and secondary schools. These range from badminton and table tennis to swimming galas and hockey competitions.
