‘Together Taking Learning Above and Beyond’

Art and Design

'Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity.

A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.

As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.'

National Curriculum 2013

Intent

At Farnham Common Village Schools, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design contributes to the development of a rich and creative learning environment  providing the children with opportunities to express their individual interests, thought and ideas.

Our aim at Farnham Common Village Schools is to ensure that children are confident approaching artwork, feel a strong sense of achievement, value the impact of art within their own lives and are able to reach their full potential.

Curriculum Aims

The teaching and implementation of the Art and Design Curriculum at Farnham Common Village Schools Primary School is based on the National Curriculum.

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  1.  Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences

  2. Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques

  3.  Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design

  4.  Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Curriculum Implementation

Art and Design is taught throughout the year and is often linked to other areas of the curriculum through our termly topics; Discover, Explore and Create. The Create topic in the Summer Term allows for a more focused approach on Art and Design activities, alongside other creative areas, such as drama, music and film. We aim to include a broad range of techniques and media and to look at the works of famous artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

For further details, please see the curriculum overview which shows the Art and Design curriculum for each year group.
